Youth Group Dennis & Patty Colburn Our 30 Hour Famine was held on Feb 27th-28th. We began our fast at noon on Saturday and ended it together at 6:00 on Sunday evening. Thirteen youth and eight adults participated in various events that were held over the 30 hours. On Saturday evening, we watched a documentary called “The Glue Boys” and learned about the plight of thousands of street children all over the world. Our time together that evening ended with a candlelight service with 100 candles lit and 1 snuffed out every 7 seconds representing the 25,000 children who die each day from hunger related causes-1 every 7 seconds. On Sunday, we spent part of the afternoon tying fleece blankets as a service project. Six blankets were made that will be given to Safe Harbor for their clients. Our group also went to Bethany Lutheran church to celebrate Pastor Chris Heller’s ordination at his ordination service. Later in the afternoon, we went on a scavenger hunt for the AlWood Food Pantry. Three teams were given a list of items needed by the food pantry and then sent out in town to collect as many as they could. All three teams were able to collect every item due to the generosity of our community. At 6:00 we ended our fast together with communion and a time of reflection where we shared what we had learned during our 30 hours and what changes we are going to make in our lives. Finally, we were able to have a delicious meal together donated by Tory Garrett and Shanie Sanders. Thank you, Tory and Shanie!! The final total collected for the 30 Hour Famine was $4,638. This is a new record for the eight years that we have done this and over twice the amount that was the old record! Thank yo to everyone who so generously donated. The youth have learned a valuable lesson in giving as they have witnessed your generosity in action. As you know, this amount will be multiplied 10 times through U.S. government grants that World Vision had acquired making our amount $46,380! If God is calling you to do more, there are opportunities to sponsor a child through World Vision. There are packets in the fellowship hall for six children who are awaiting sponsors. Please see Sally if you are interested or have questions. The cost is only $35 a month and makes a real difference in the life of a child. Information about the group
The youth group held their kickoff at Dennis & Patty Colburn’s farm on Sept 13th. Twenty two youth participated in various Farm Fear Factor games such as “cow liver relay” and “cow chip hurling”. The evening ended with a wiener roast and fellowship time. We also welcomed the new associate pastor from the Edward’s River Ministry, Chris Heller to our group. Chris, being a farm boy himself, participated in the cow chip hurling contest. Thanks to Dennis and Patty for hosting this event and also for planning the games! They were gross but loads of fun! Thanks also to those who supported this event through financial donations—they were used to purchase the food for the wiener roast. The youth met twice in October. On Oct. 4th they met for a video and discussion. Thank you to Chris Youngren for providing our meal. A work day was held on Oct. 18th and the youth raked leaves at a couple homes.
The youth group meeting on Nov 8th was held at Bethany with a video and discussion about “Searching for Happiness in Accomplishments” which is part of our “Am I Happy” video series. Thank you to Donna Carlson for providing our meal that evening. On Nov. 27th, 17 youth traveled to Moline for our annual Toys for Tots service project. We enjoyed selecting and bagging toys for families who had signed up for this program. Afterwards, we stopped at McDonalds for lunch and fellowship. Our only event in Dec was a trip to see the movie, “A Christmas Carol”. Thank you to Doddie Johnson for helping us out with transportation to the theater. Youth group will be on break until Jan 3rd when we will do a service project for Church World Services. We will shop for items to include in hygiene kits such as washcloth, comb, soap, toothbrush, etc. Youth group funds will be used to purchase these items. When we finish shopping, we will be going to Pizza House for supper. The youth group account will also pick up the tab for this. Watch your mail for a postcard with times for this event. Our other meeting on Jan. 17th will be our 30 Hour Famine Kickoff. All youth who want to participate in the famine should be at this meeting to get their packet and to order a t-shirt.
